Why study Shang Han Lun?

Deeper understanding of the Shang Han Lun will lead to better diagnostic skill, greater proficiency in the application of herbs & acupuncture and most importantly improved clinical results. The Shang Han Lun is a clinically based text that is widely considered to be the origin of the diagnostic system used today, guiding us from signs and symptoms to treatment.
Most of the famous formulas that we learned in school were created during this era. Sadly, these beautifully crafted formulas are under utilized today due to a mistaken impression that they only address colds and flu. What few of us were taught is that Shang Han Lun formulas are the foundations of Functional Medicine. During the Han Dynasty, doctors cultivated ideas about the Emperor and our Shen residing in our Heart and Fire. Accordingly, this style of medicine seeks to promote physiological processes by fostering yang and preserving fluids. When the body functions properly it can maintain a correct relationship with Nature and resolve health issues. Herbs are prescribed in an attempt to maximize the body’s innate ability to fight off pathogens rather than to somehow destroy “evil qi”. It is a very different vision than the more materialistic approach used by most people today.

In the excellent Paradigm Publications translation by Mitchell, Wiseman and Ye, Zhang Ji’s preface says:

”Although this book cannot completely cure all diseases, it provides the means to understand the origin of illnesses encountered. If [the reader] follows the materials herein collected, [he should be able to] think out over half [of all medical problems].”

This training program is offered for those who seek “…the means to understand the origins of illness…” Would you like to broaden your depth of understanding of our medicine through its classical roots? Come and study the Canonical heritage that is the foundation of this medicine, but may have been lacking in your formal training.
