The Treatise on Cold Damage [shang han lun] is the oldest surviving clinical handbook in the history of Chinese medicine. Written by Eastern Han dynasty imperial envoy Zhang Zhongjing, it is an integral part of his collective writings once labeled the Treatise on Cold Damage and Complex Diseases. [Shanghan Zabing Lun].
This program offers a series of workshops and lectures that teach Shang Han Lun based medicine from the Tian-Zeng Lineage, as transmitted to Dr. Versluys through discipleship under Dr. Zeng Rongxiu, who was a disciple of the late physician Tian Heming 田鹤鸣, the last grandmaster of the Shanghan Lun tradition outside of the university circuit in West China.
The original Shanghan Zabing Lun consists of the popular Shanghan Lun and Jingui Yaolue. The Shanghan Lun or Treatise on Cold Damage teaches the diagnosis and treatment of externally contracted diseases, while the Jingui Yaolue or Essentials of the Golden Cabinet instructs the diagnosis and treatment of about fifty internal diseases along with another thirty-six gynecological and obstetric disorders.
The complete book is the first historical manual to teach the treatment of both acute and chronic complex diseases that have been triggered externally or have arisen from internal damage. Though a classical work, it is of great clinical value for modern day practice.

The word on the street...
“I first heard about Mr. Versluys years ago when my mentor in China reported that ‘an outstanding Belgian student’ had entered the local TCM master’s program to study under his tutelage. For the next couple of years, I kept hearing more about the talents of this young acolyte; his extraordinary fluency in both spoken and written Chinese, his multi-lingual abilities, his prolific translation endeavors, his spiritual pilgrimages to Tibet, and most importantly, his fervent dedication to Classical Chinese Medicine. In addition to his excellent work at the University, he spent most of his free time to seek out distinguished physicians who practice outside the academic system and study with them under the traditional discipleship system. Since Mr. Versluys became a faculty member at NCNM’s Department of Classical Chinese Medicine, he has more than fulfilled my highest expectations; he quickly earned a reputation as one of our Department’s most popular and academically most rigorous faculty members.”

“Arnaud Versluys is uniquely qualified to teach the Shanghan Lun, a text with tremendous depth and the root of the internal medicine tradition in Chinese medicine. He is one of the few, perhaps the only, Westerner to train from the very beginning to a PhD degree in mainland Chinese medical schools. In addition he is the only Westerner to be an official part of a lineage school of Shanghan Lun practitioners, certainly the only one teaching in Western countries on a regular basis. Although he is still a young man, I strongly recommend that practitioners of Chinese medicine study with Arnaud as he has devoted many years to penetrating the essential theory and clinical applications of the Shanghan Lun, Jingui Yaolue and Suwen, and presents material never before offered to Western audiences.”
- Z’ev Rosenberg, MS, LAc
Dean, Herbal Medicine Department, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine
“Dr. Versluys has a high degree of integrity and cheerful personality. With his mature academic ability and strong sense of responsibility, he continues to draw very favorable appraisal from his students as well as his colleagues.”

Professor, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine

Dr. Versluys lecturing on Formula Families and Modifications...
Complex diseases, simple formulas, clear results!
Deeper understanding of the Shang Han Lun will lead to better diagnostic skill, greater proficiency in the application of herbs & acupuncture, and improved clinical results. The Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) is the seminal text that serves as the root of Chinese and Oriental medicine at large.
It has been argued that the basic system of identifying signs and symptoms and defining a conformation leading directly to treatment was created in the Shang Han Lun. Certainly it is the oldest surviving text that defines diagnosis and treatment with such clarity. However, due to minimal presentation at TCM schools, most practitioners operate under the mistaken idea that this is a book simply for treating “colds and flu” and so don’t relate it to the complicated, chronic issues they face daily in their clinics. Nothing could be further from the truth! The idea of cold damage may be viewed metaphorically as representing the patient’s loss of the ability to harmoniously interact with Nature and the world around them. Read More

His frequent lectures across Europe and Canada, and his numerous publications are clear testaments to this affect.
